Photolog: Yakshagana Performers

I tried to capture the way in which Yakshangana performers prepare for their role. They sit under a single light bulb or a candle light and paint their faces to transform themselves. Forget professional makeup tools; kalpavriksha is the core here. Organic colours are mixed with coconut oil to make the base, lip-liner, lipstick, and black eyeliner. They apply makeup with tiny sticks made from parts of coconut leaves. Winged eyes, eyebrows, red lips – all are applied with this tiny stick. After their performance, they even remove their makeup with coconut oil. This is a great lesson for someone who is interested in makeup or is a professional makeup artist. The way these men transform into a woman or God or an animal is phenomenal. And the colours… oh the colours!
